If I rent digital content, do I need to return anything at the end of the rental period?

No, because your content is digital, it is all handled by the Yuzu system.

If you choose not to purchase the digital content or re-rent it at the end of your rental period, your digital content will simply expire.  

Please Note: Access to not only your digital content but also any Highlights and Notes will also end when the rental period expires.
